.. or at least, I can’t write coherently.
That’s according to a recent review on a story I uploaded five years ago.
So before I show the comment, I want to say a few things.
- I never claim to be able to write. Only that I try and that I’m working towards my goal of potentially pursuing writing in the future.
- If you think I’m about to get mad and rant about this comment, think again.
- I actually agree with them.
First of all, here’s the comment for some context:
A little harsh, perhaps but here’s a run through of my reactions.
First, a raised eyebrow “Excuse me?”
Second, a little cussing out of the Guest in question, while waiting for the story to load because honestly, how rude.
And lastly… agreement.
This is a story (all about how my life got twist turned upside down)… I’m not helping.
So, for all you beady-eyed FanFiction readers and writers, you’ll recognise the format. For those who haven’t seen or heard of this site, it’s one I was an avid member of in my teens. You can upload stories based off other works of fiction (be it Books, Television, Movies, Games etc.) and spin your own story surrounding those characters and that world.
I wrote and uploaded this story around four or five years ago when I was eighteen years old. Yes, that’s still an age where I probably should have been better at editing my stories but, in all honesty, at that stage it wasn’t something I had considered pursuing. Sure, I loved writing – but could I do it professionally? Was I good enough?
Questions, to this day, I still can’t answer.
But alas, I digress.
It was something I did purely for fun and entertainment, and I didn’t need to worry if anyone else accepted it, except me.
I wish this person hadn’t signed in as a Guest. I want to tell the Guest-man/woman that I agree with what they’ve said in their comment.
This type of reviewer is a writers worst nightmare and dream come true. Sure, I wasn’t thrilled at first but without these people, how are we to improve? (I’m just glad it wasn’t my Harry Potter FanFic, that may have hurt). What I find most odd is that every other review on that story is one of praise, and now I can barely get through it myself.
Perhaps I’ll go back and edit the particular piece above however, I must admit that having an accurate representation of my writing history does have a certain appeal.
I think it popped up because I recently removed an Authors Note chapter within the story (no-one likes Authors Notes in FanFiction), but in all honesty I’m glad that I did. After reading the piece it became clear that no, it is not my best work and that’s OK. All I can hope is that I’ve somewhat improved over the past four or five years. If something I wrote back then is better than what I’m writing now, then I’m doing something wrong. Fact.
Thanks for reading – Much Love!
